Standing at 3116 ft on the summit of Helvellyn the views are breathtaking, all before you is the splendour of the Lake District. One of the most popular holiday areas in England, high mountains and deep lakes combine to form spectacular scenery throughout the area. For the outdoor enthusiast there is plenty to do. Walking, climbing and watersports are all readily available. Whilst for the lover of peace there are plenty of quiet corners where the pace of life is slow and easy as it was hundreds of years ago. The towns of Keswick, Ambleside and Bowness are busy centres where the hustle and bustle of Lakeland life can be fully appreciated. Ideal as centres for exploring the surrounding area, each town has its own attractions. Keswick in the North is 'Queen of the English Lakes' whilst Ambleside and Bowness are both served by the steamers which plough their way across Lake Windermere. Whatever the time of year there is always plenty to see and do in the Lake District: this is truly a land for all seasons.
